My Rant Against Calorie Counting

I'll begin with a quick test for all you out there in internet-land.
The question is: Which of these meals is healthier? A or B?

Meal A-- Chicken and Waffles.

Meal B-- Salmon and Veggies.

Alright, think you know the answer? Here it is: meal B is healthier. Surprised? Of course not. This test sucks.

I fully understand that counting calories can be an extremely useful tool for those trying to lose weight. It's simple science: 3,500 calories equals 1 pound of body weight, so with every 3,500 calorie deficit there is 1 pound of weight-loss. The ideal (read: healthiest and most realistic) rate of weight loss is about 2 pounds a week, which would mean a 7,000 calorie deficit a week. Doesn't that seem like a lot?
Granted, you must remember that we're burning calories all the time; you're burning calories now as you read this blog post. Even though burning excess calories is a crucial part of weight loss, I really find calorie counting to be unnecessary and labor-intensive and almost OCD.

Just eat healthy and controlled. By "controlled," I mean limit yourself to reasonably sized portions. Chipotle burritos are a good example of a portion that is out of control.

Plain and simple: you're smart enough to read this blog then you're smart enough to identify what is good for you and what is bad for you. We all know when we're making good nutritional choices and when we're making bad ones. Our media has become so saturated with nutrition information (granted, not all of it accurate) that knowing what's good and bad for you is as common-sensical as knowing the ill effects of smoking. It's all just one huge DUH.

Eat more fruits and vegetables, and less fast food. Duh.
So forget about the calorie counting. Just like exercise (and most everything else in life), concern yourself more with the quality of your food rather than obsessing over the quantity of it.
